Sam Wegner Memorial Award

Found on the South Bend Alumni Association Web Site

A graduate of Central High School and Northwestern University in the 30's, Sam served in the military during WWII and returned to South Bend to teach and coach at Central and then Washington High School where his football teams stand out in the memories of fans and foes.

More than a football coach Sam set the example for students and fellow educators. His integrity, intelligence, loyalty, and wit are things to be emulated. When he gave his friendship it was unconditional.

Because of his logic his guidance was often sought by subordinates, peers and many who held higher positions in the management schematic. One is wise not to use superior when making reference to those who had the opportunity to work with Sam. He held administrative positions and ended his educational career as the Athletic Director at Jackson and then Riley High Schools, when Riley and Jackson were combined in 1975.

In his honor and memory the Sam Wegner Memorial Award was created by his many friends at the time of his untimely death at an all to early age. Many of those friends have donated to the perpetual care of the award. Recipients of the award have often said they cherish this one above all others. Quite a tribute when you consider the number of recognitions many have received over the years for their personal achievements.
