"Listen Up Kids"If you had the pleasure of US History Sam Wegner style you'll instantly feel as though all the years melted away and you're back in class. I don't know what the odds are but it's nothing I would have taken a bet on back in 71 when Jeff Clemans '73 was a junior and Jeannie Clemans and I were mere freshman. Not that it would have made any difference, had we known. September 1971, long before the internet Jeff decides to tape one of Sam's lectures. It's a good quality tape too, not some scratchy recording. He saves it. Fast forward thirty years...the freshman is now a web designer. Jeff finds the web site and more important, Jeff has managed to save and find the tape. He converts it into digital format and sends it off. I get it and decide that the best way to listen to it is in flash format and I convert it again to what you will see and hear on the web page. Every day routine stuff right? No, but it is what makes this site so special and its especially nice that Jeff was able to let Sam's wife and kids know about the site and to hear them say how neat it was to hear Sam doing what he loved to do...Sam Wegner was ...and even though he won't like this fuss...just how special one alumni of JHS - for preserving some of that history for all of us today. The first time you visit the web page, it will take approximately 8-10 minutes before "Kid's were you ever 40" lecture starts to play. It took thirty years to bring it to you, what's another ten minutes? Click the link below. It will open in a new window so you can keep reading while you wait. |
There's another former Jackson High School
coach in the Indiana Hall of Fame, Sam Wegner. The following tribute to Sam
and announcement of the Sam Wegner Memorial Award given by his friend Ron
Bella, former SBCSC Athletic Director and now Director of the South Bend
Alumni Association. A graduate of Central High School and Northwestern University in the 30's, Sam served in the military during WWII and returned to South Bend to teach and coach at Central and then Washington High School where his football teams stand out in the memories of fans and foes. More than a football coach Sam set the example for students and fellow educators. His integrity, intelligence, loyalty, and wit are things to be emulated. When he gave his friendship it was unconditional. Because of his logic his guidance was often sought by subordinates, peers and many who held higher positions in the management schematic. One is wise not to use superior when making reference to those who had the opportunity to work with Sam. He held administrative positions and ended his educational career as the Athletic Director at Jackson and then Riley High Schools, when Riley and Jackson were combined in 1975. In his honor and memory the Sam Wegner Memorial Award was
created by his many friends at the time of his untimely death at an all to
early age. Many of those friends have donated to the perpetual care of the
award. Recipients of the award have often said they cherish this one above
all others. Quite a tribute when you consider the number of recognitions
many have received over the years for their personal achievements.
