Historical Perspective:
Andrew Jackson High School
South Bend Indiana

1965-66 Looking Ahead

You may find it interesting to take a look at JHS from a historical perspective.  How did Jackson gets its name?  Who wrote those lyrics to the fight song?

Jackson High School was well equipped even by today's standards.

The facility itself stands, twenty seven years later as one of the most over built middle schools in the SBCSC system.

Fight Song Lyrics

Three factors were involved in the naming of Andrew Jackson High School.  The first was that many of the land deeds around this area were signed by the seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson.

The school's being located on Miami and Jackson Roads was another factor.  Also "it has been the custom of the Board of Education to name South Bend schools after local, state, or national figures," according to Mr. William Mueller, Director of Building Services for the SBCSC.

A few years ago the land where Jackson now stands was a field owned by James S. McCann and Kenneth D. Woods.  The land was bought by the school corporation because it seemed to be near the center of child population in this area.

During the first week of September, 1964, the ground was first broken for construction.

Four students collaborated on the words chosen September 1965 to be Jackson's school song.

Rick Overgaard, Tami Winters, Carol Barley, and Vicki Arch were declared the winners and copies of their words were distributed to Jacksonites before the first LaSalle game.  The Student Council made the final decision on the winning song.

"Jackson Victory March" was sung to the tune of Michigan's "The Victors".

For the record, we did a good job of remembering the words for the web site.
