The Early Years

Bio: James Early

Mr. Early was born in Brazil, Indiana (1921) moving to South Bend at the age of 3.

A graduate of South Bend Riley, he attended Franklin College, Franklin, Indiana, for two and a half years.

He entered the service and became a first lieutenant in charge of an ammunition company.  After leaving the army three and a half years later, he finished his bachelor's degree in physical education, science and social studies at Franklin.  He earned his master's in administration at Ball State while coaching football and teaching in Anderson, IN.

Mr. Early came to South Bend in 1952 to teach science at Central High School.  He also coached varsity track team with "some success,"  as he put it.  (They were state champs in '58 under his direction.)  He went to Riley in 1962 as assistant principal.

A rather unusual mixture of school loyalties exists in his family, since his daughter is an alumna of Washington; one of his sons from Central and another entered the first freshman class at LaSalle, Jackson's sister school.

Outside interests include: fishing, golf and sports activities.  Last information known is that Mr. Early recovered from open heart surgery several years ago and now lives with his family somewhere in the state of Tennessee.

Mr. James Early was the only principal to preside over Jackson High School .

Dedication

Despite a fire on the stage only three days before, the formal dedication of Jackson finally took place, November 6, six months after the date originally set.

The builders presented the school to the holding corporation who in turn presented it to the South Bend Community School Corporation.

Among the dignitaries on the stage were the Board of School Trustees, architects, South Bend Mayor Lloyd Allen, Superintendent Charles C. Holt and former Superintendent Alex Jardine, under whose tenure the building was begun.
